Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
