The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
